GAFFE = an embarrassing mistake that you make in the public, especially one that offends or upsets someone




FLOP = (informal) a complete failure




RIB = (old-fashioned) to joke about someone in a friendly way that makes them slightly embarrassed 



e.g.  1989 Oscar ceremony hosted one of the most memorable gaffes in show-business. In a bizarre opening number, Rob Lowe was forced to sing and dance with an actress dressed up as Snow White. The performance was a commercial flop. In the following days Lowe was mercilessly ribbed for his bad singing.
